Aventus is the fragrance that every other fragrance is trying to become. Launched in 2010, it turned pineapple into the most imitated opening in modern perfumery. Birch smoke, blackcurrant, oakmoss underneath. The dry down is clean, animalic, impossible to ignore. Every batch smells slightly different. That is either a quality control problem or the most compelling reason to own more than one bottle. Creed says the latter.

Althaïr sits differently from every other Marly in the lineup - no sweetness, no crowd-pleasing. Bergamot and pink pepper open with a coldness that takes time to trust, then oud and sandalwood arrive and the whole thing becomes architectural. This is not a fragrance that performs. It simply occupies the room. The people who find Layton too approachable end up here eventually.

Ben Gorham made Bal d'Afrique as a tribute to 1920s Paris and the African artists who defined it - marigold, violet, musk, a cyclamen heart that is impossible to categorize. The Absolu deepens everything: more resin, more animalic depth, longer on skin. It is not a fragrance you wear to be noticed. It is a fragrance you wear because the alternative is wearing something lesser and you know it.

Supremacy Collector's is the Aventus conversation at $40 — pineapple, birch, musk — without the batch variation anxiety or the credit card damage. The bottle looks more expensive than it is. The fragrance smells more expensive than it is. Nothing about this makes sense at the price point.

The house is small, the distribution is limited, and the people who own it tend to stop recommending it after a while because they would prefer to keep it to themselves.

It is the gateway drug of niche perfumery. The people who dismiss it have usually moved past it. The people still wearing it never needed to.

The EDP pushes lavender and vanilla into the base, making it warmer than the EDT. Wearing it means someone has worn it before you in every room you enter. That is either the problem or the entire point, depending on who you are.

Oregano and incense open like something burning in a temple - not pleasantly, not immediately. Give it twenty minutes. What emerges is smoke, labdanum, and leather that lasts sixteen hours on skin. Most people smell it on a strip and put it back. Those people are wrong.
