The Vision Pro is the most impressive technology product that nobody needs. The micro-OLED displays are stunning. The eye tracking is uncanny. The spatial computing paradigm is genuinely new. And yet. The battery lasts two hours. The headset weighs enough to leave marks on your face. The content library is barren. Apple has built a proof of concept and priced it like a finished product. The Vision Pro is a letter from the future, and the postage was $3,499. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on your relationship with patience.

Android XR is Google and Samsung admitting they need each other. The Galaxy XR runs Chrome, YouTube, Google Maps spatially — the apps you actually use, not a separate ecosystem you have to learn. Micro-OLED, eye and hand tracking, Snapdragon XR2 Plus. The content library is thin right now in the way every new platform is thin right now. Samsung and Google are betting the ecosystem fills in. That bet has failed before.

The Index controllers are still the best hand input in consumer VR. Individual finger tracking, open-hand release, knuckle grip - shipped in 2019 and nothing from Meta, Sony, or Apple has matched them since. The headset around those controllers is five years old. The resolution is dated. It needs base stations bolted to walls and a gaming PC to run. Valve has not updated it. At $999 you are paying for controllers that the industry abandoned and then quietly started copying.

Same chip as the Quest 3. Same library. Same passthrough. Fresnel lenses instead of pancake - the edges blur and the depth of field is shallower. Meta knows most buyers will not notice until they have owned a Quest 3 and compared directly. $299 is the price of that bet. For anyone coming from nothing it is undetectable. For anyone coming from the Quest 3 it is immediately obvious.

OLED per eye, eye tracking, headset haptics, adaptive triggers. The hardware is exceptional and the library launched strong. Then Sony stopped supporting it. First-party VR titles dried up. The PSVR2 is a $399 headset carrying a first-party catalog that peaked in 2023. It works on PC now, which extended its life by accident more than intention. The hardware deserved a better plan.

The best VR headset most people can actually buy. Pancake lenses, full color passthrough, standalone - no PC, no console, no setup that requires a YouTube tutorial. The library is wide and getting wider. Mark Zuckerberg personally demoed it against the Vision Pro and won on paper. The fact that Meta built the category benchmark is either inspiring or the most unsettling thing that happened in consumer tech this decade, depending on how you feel about who is building your reality.
